This Is An 11 Billion Dollar Industry In The United States

Hey Reader,

Let's talk ice cream. In 1984, President Ronald Regan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. In his proclamation, Regan made two claims I found particularly interesting:

  • "Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States."
  • "The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens."

I'm not here to debate the first claim (partially because I could rival Regan in his love for Ice Cream), but his second claim got me thinking - how big is the ice cream industry now? 40 years later? Here are some interesting statistics I found via the International Dairy Foods Association:

  • In 2023, ice cream makers in the U.S. churned out 1.30 billion gallons of ice cream.
  • The ice cream industry supports 27,100 direct jobs and provides 1.9 billion in direct wages.
  • A majority of U.S. ice cream and frozen dessert manufacturers have been in business for more than 50 years.
  • The average American consumes about 20 lbs of ice cream a year.

You may be asking, why are we talking about ice cream Rayce? Well, this Saturday, Faithonomics is participating in The Big Chill Fundraiser - an ice cream celebration that supports the work of The Shalom Project of Winston-Salem. Between today and Saturday afternoon, I will be whipping up eight gallons of my homemade Sugar Mama Ice Cream (Cinnamon Ice Cream with Moravian Sugar Cake Crumble) to help raise funds that will challenge poverty and help cultivate neighborhoods of belonging in the place Faithonomics calls home - Winston-Salem.

You may have heard me say that Faithonomics is a sacred experiment in entrepreneurship. As we continue to grow the work of Faithonomics we are also explore how to shape a company that believes in corporate responsibility and the redistribution of wealth. This is why you will find us around town if you are local to Winston-Salem because we believe in giving back to the community who first believed in us. This is also why we started The Wild Imagination Fund at the Winston-Salem Foundation where we've committed to tithe 10% of our profits to support the work of local nonprofits through unrestrictive grants.

So, if you are in Winston-Salem this Saturday, I invite you to stop by the Faithonomics table at The Big Chill and say hello. I'd love to meet you and serve you up some of my Sugar Mama Ice Cream!

-Rayce
